Why choose acupuncture over standard medical procedures?
Oriental medicine is not a substitute for western medicine. They are complementary systems. Generally speaking, western medicine is best for acute illnesses and for diagnostic procedures. Chronic illnesses often respond better to Oriental Medicine. Most acupuncture patients have already had western medical diagnosis and treatment of their conditions but need further help. Oriental medical diagnosis uses examination and collection of information about signs and symptoms in order to analyze the status of the Qi (chi), the body's energy system.
How safe is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a very safe system of health care when done by a well-trained practitioner. The national standards for clean needle technique are enforced at Walker Wellness. All needles are sterile, practitioner's hands are washed thoroughly between patients, and office hygiene principles are carefully observed.
Will it hurt?
You will feel the needle prick but it feels nothing like getting an injection. An acupuncture needle is very fine, with a tapered point that parts the skin rather than cutting the tissue. There are usually some sensations of energy movement, but not pain. Most people fall asleep when left with the needles, and wake refreshed and relaxed.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies according to the condition. Acute problems may respond with just a few treatments. A chronic condition that you have had for several years may require a longer series of treatments. Treatments are usually once a week.
How long will my appointment last?
The first treatment will take about one hour. Subsequent appointments will last about a half-hour.
